Napoleon Oakville 3 Glass Gas Insert Selection and Installation
Serving the Triangle and surrounding Central North Carolina communities.
A contemporary glass-media fire inside your existing fireplace
A gas insert does not have to look like a traditional log fire. The Napoleon Oakville 3 Glass offers a contemporary glass ember bed, reflective interior and accent lighting for homeowners who want to give an existing fireplace a more modern appearance.
You don’t need to choose a model before contacting Chimneys Plus. We can help you compare appearance, heating goals and installation requirements, then select an insert that works with your fireplace.

Why consider the Oakville 3 Glass?
- A modern alternative to a traditional log display. Topaz glass media and MIRRO-FLAME reflective panels create a different visual effect from the log-style Oakville models. The Night Light adds illumination when you want the fireplace to remain a focal point with the flame off. Compatible faceplates and backing plates help connect that contemporary fire with your existing hearth.
- Useful room warmth. A sealed gas insert can make an underused hearth a more practical part of everyday life.
- Backup warmth when prepared. Gas-fire operation can continue during an outage with the required gas supply and working backup batteries; mains-powered accessories do not operate.
- Outside air for combustion. The direct-vent system keeps combustion separate from room air and vents exhaust outdoors.
An open fireplace draws air your home has already heated into the fire and sends it up the chimney, carrying much of the fire’s heat with it. A direct-vent gas insert draws combustion air from outdoors instead and delivers useful warmth into the room.
An insert inside your existing fireplace
This appliance is installed inside an eligible existing wood-burning masonry or prefabricated fireplace. It does not replace the entire fireplace, and it is not a freestanding unit or a built-in fireplace that can be framed into a new wall on its own.
Chimneys Plus checks the fireplace’s condition and construction, usable cavity, tapered walls, gas-line location and protrusion, chimney and venting, hearth, mantel, mantel legs and nearby sidewalls. Front and backing-plate choices also affect the finished appearance and access. Minimum dimensions are a starting point, not a fit guarantee.
Planning electrical work
Plan for suitable household electrical power for the included Night Light and optional circulating blower. Battery backup supports the gas fire during an outage, not those electrical accessories. Chimneys Plus coordinates any required electrical work as part of your fireplace installation, so you do not have to arrange it separately. An existing compliant connection may be usable; adding or relocating power can mean additional work and investment.

Frequently asked questions
What makes the Oakville 3 Glass different from other gas inserts?
The main distinction is the fire presentation: the Oakville 3 Glass uses a contemporary Topaz glass ember bed rather than a traditional log set. It also offers Night Light illumination and reflective panels. Chimneys Plus can help you compare that look with log-style inserts before deciding which best suits your room.
Will the Oakville 3 Glass fit my fireplace?
It may! Napoleon’s model-specific installation manual lists a minimum fireplace opening of 29 inches wide × 21 inches high × 17⅛ inches deep. These are cavity requirements, not faceplate dimensions. Fronts, backing plates, risers and other installation details still need to be checked against the exact model and current instructions.
The fireplace must also meet the required hearth and combustible clearances. We check the mantel, mantel legs and sidewalls, gas-line location and protrusion, taper and obstructions, vent routing and condition of the existing fireplace. Chimneys Plus can help determine whether this insert is right for your fireplace and identify any adjustments needed for installation.
What style and control options are available for the Napoleon Oakville 3 Glass?
The approved Topaz glass ember bed is part of this model’s contemporary appearance. Reflective interior panels, compatible faceplates and backing plates complete the look. Its remote operates the supported flame and accessory functions. Glass media must be the approved type, amount and arrangement; it cannot be replaced with arbitrary decorative material.
Is the Napoleon Oakville 3 Glass a real backup heat source when the power goes out?
Yes! With gas available and fresh batteries installed in the receiver, the Oakville 3 Glass can provide flame and room warmth during a power outage. The Night Light and any installed blower do not operate on the backup batteries. We’ll explain battery upkeep and outage operation for your installation. It provides supplemental warmth rather than a promise to heat the entire home.
Does the Napoleon Oakville 3 Glass need electricity, and can Chimneys Plus handle that work?
Plan for suitable household electrical power for the included Night Light and optional circulating blower. Battery backup supports the gas fire during an outage, not those electrical accessories. Chimneys Plus coordinates any required electrical work as part of your fireplace installation, so you do not have to arrange it separately. An existing compliant connection may be usable; adding or relocating power can mean additional work and investment.
Can Chimneys Plus install a gas line for the Napoleon Oakville 3 Glass if my fireplace doesn’t have one?
Yes! Chimneys Plus is licensed in North Carolina to install gas piping, and we routinely handle this work as part of gas fireplace appliance installations. We can evaluate your existing gas supply, install the piping needed for your new appliance and handle the required permitting.
Is a permit required in North Carolina to install a Napoleon Oakville 3 Glass gas insert?
Permit requirements depend on the work involved and your local inspection department. Installing a new gas line requires permitting. Replacing the fireplace itself also requires permitting, even when the gas line already exists. For a gas insert installed inside an existing fireplace, we’ll confirm the requirements for your project. Whenever a permit is required, Chimneys Plus handles the permitting for you.
Should I choose gas logs or a gas insert such as the Napoleon Oakville 3 Glass?
Vented gas logs are often chosen mainly for ambiance. A sealed direct-vent gas insert is worth considering when you want more useful room heat, greater control and backup warmth. It uses outdoor combustion air and vents exhaust outdoors.
Vent-free gas logs can provide a quick burst of warmth, such as taking the chill off a room in the morning. For longer periods of heating, a sealed direct-vent insert is often the better choice. Vent-free logs produce substantial room heat, but release combustion byproducts and moisture into the home. They are intended for supplemental, intermittent use rather than continuous heating. Chimneys Plus recommends short operating periods, generally a couple of hours at a time, with ventilation that may include cracking a window as required by the appliance instructions and room conditions. An open window does not replace those ventilation requirements.
Do I need to choose an insert such as the Napoleon Oakville 3 Glass before contacting Chimneys Plus?
No! You don’t need to know which brand or model you want before reaching out. Tell us what you’d like to improve about your fireplace, whether that’s warmth, ambiance, convenience or backup heat, and we’ll help you compare suitable options. We can guide you through fit, performance and style so you can choose with confidence.
Does the Napoleon Oakville 3 Glass need regular maintenance?
Yes. Regular professional service helps keep the burner, pilot, glass, controls, venting and any blower working as intended. We can help you plan appropriate maintenance and explain routine battery care. Only approved media and components should be used, and the installed glass and protective barrier must remain in place during operation.
What warranty does Napoleon offer for the Oakville 3 Glass?
Napoleon provides a President’s Lifetime Limited Warranty, with coverage and limits that vary by component. It is not lifetime coverage for every part or all service costs. We can help you review the warranty for the exact appliance and explain how a service or warranty request is handled.
