Napoleon High Definition 81 Gas Fireplace Selection and Installation

A substantial fire to enjoy from two rooms

The Napoleon High Definition 81 is worth considering when a fireplace should connect spaces rather than disappear into one wall. Its see-through design creates two views of the same fire, making it a natural conversation starter between a living room and dining area or within a larger gathering space. Chimneys Plus helps you decide whether that shared view suits the way you actually use both rooms.

Serving the Triangle and surrounding Central North Carolina communities.

This is a built-in gas fireplace with its own firebox, not an insert that must fit inside a separate existing fireplace. A new installation can become part of a room-dividing wall; replacing an existing unit requires a fresh assessment of framing, venting and finishes.

Choose the fire’s character

The HD81 offers log, glass and mineral-rock burner assemblies, so its appearance can lean traditional or contemporary. The required burner assembly is part of selecting a complete fireplace, not an interchangeable handful of decorative material. Accent lighting and an included remote add convenience; an optional blower helps circulate warmth when household electricity is available. We help coordinate the burner, interior and surrounding materials into one intentional design.

Plan both sides together

A see-through installation needs suitable clearances and finishing on both faces, an approved direct-vent route and access for service. Its sealed combustion system draws combustion air from outside and exhausts outdoors instead of consuming already conditioned room air for combustion. The wall opening, appliance body and complete installed enclosure are different measurements; a product width alone cannot establish fit.

Chimneys Plus handles or coordinates gas piping, required electrical work and permitting. The HD81 requires a hardwired electrical connection even though its battery-backed controls can support ordinary-vent burner operation during an outage. Any proposed power-vent configuration must be reviewed separately: a powered exhaust cannot run on the fireplace’s control batteries.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Napoleon High Definition 81 an insert?

No. It is a complete built-in fireplace. An insert is a different appliance intended for an approved existing fireplace; we can help determine which approach fits your home.

Where does the Napoleon High Definition 81 make the most sense?

Consider it when two adjoining areas should share a fire. We evaluate sight lines, furniture placement, heat comfort and the available wall depth before recommending a see-through layout.

Can the Napoleon High Definition 81 operate during a power outage?

Yes! In its ordinary direct-vent configuration, its battery-backed controls can operate the burner while gas remains available and the required batteries are working. Lights and the optional blower do not run on those batteries. A power-vent installation requires electricity and should not be selected on the assumption of battery-only operation.

Does the Napoleon High Definition 81 still need electricity?

Yes. Its installation manual requires hardwiring. Backup batteries are not a substitute for that normal installation requirement, and powered accessories need household electricity. Chimneys Plus coordinates the required electrical work.

Can I choose different media for the Napoleon High Definition 81?

Yes. The fireplace uses specified burner assemblies for its log, glass or mineral-rock presentation. We match approved components rather than mixing unrelated logs, burners and media.

Can the Napoleon High Definition 81 use my existing gas line?

Possibly. We check the fuel, line capacity, pressure, shutoff and combined appliance demand. An existing connection is a starting point, not proof that no piping changes are needed.

Does a Napoleon High Definition 81 replacement require permits?

Yes, fireplace switch-outs require permitting even when gas piping already exists. Chimneys Plus confirms the applicable requirements and handles the permits as part of the project.

What maintenance does the Napoleon High Definition 81 need?

Arrange qualified inspection and service at least annually, following the appliance manual. Service includes the burner, pilot, glass, controls and venting as applicable. The specified safety barriers must remain installed during use.
