Napoleon Ascent X Gas Fireplace Selection and Installation

Find the fire that fits your home

If you like a traditional log fire but want everyday conveniences built into the package, the Napoleon Ascent X is a useful place to begin. It offers the familiar proportions of a hearth fireplace with a clean view of the fire. Chimneys Plus helps compare its two sizes with your room, furniture arrangement and surrounding cabinetry—not just the width of an old fireplace opening.

Serving the Triangle and surrounding Central North Carolina communities.

What makes this family different

The 36 and 42 models include an oak log set, a remote, circulating blower and NIGHT LIGHT feature. These details make the Ascent X a distinct step in the Ascent range: the lighting adds visual interest, while the blower and remote make daily use more convenient. Approved decorative fronts, panels and trims help shift the finished look from restrained and contemporary to more traditional.

Selection and installation, considered together

Consider the Ascent X for a living room, family room or a planned fireplace replacement where you want a log-focused display. Optional heat-management arrangements can change finishing and TV-placement possibilities, but they must be designed into the enclosure. We review the actual manual, kit and television requirements rather than treating ‘designed for TVs’ as permission to mount any screen at any height.

This is a complete built-in gas fireplace with its own firebox, not an insert that requires a separate existing fireplace. Its direct-vent combustion system uses outside air and exhausts outdoors rather than using already conditioned room air for combustion. A suitable vent route, the complete enclosure, finish materials and service access all matter; the appliance’s body dimensions alone do not establish installation fit.

Chimneys Plus handles or coordinates gas piping, required electrical work and permitting. We check the fuel supply and the selected model’s requirements before finalizing the installation. Both BX36 and BX42 installation manuals require a hardwired electrical connection. The blower and lighting need household power; backup controls do not eliminate normal wiring requirements.

Napoleon classifies this as a decorative appliance, not a rated backup-heating system or a replacement for home heating.

Frequently asked questions

How is the Napoleon Ascent X different from the standard Ascent?

The Ascent X packages traditional oak logs with an included remote, blower and accent lighting. It is worth comparing when those daily-use features matter as much as the basic fireplace shape.

Which Napoleon Ascent X size should I choose?

Choose by the room’s proportions, viewing distance and installation space, not simply the larger number. The 36 and 42 have different enclosure and venting requirements; we confirm the complete installation before recommending a model.

Can the Napoleon Ascent X operate during a power outage?

Yes! The BX36/BX42 controls support battery-backed burner operation with gas available and the specified backup source connected and charged. The blower and lighting are not battery-powered. We demonstrate the correct backup arrangement for the exact unit; any electrically powered venting or heat-management dependency must be checked separately.

Does the Napoleon Ascent X require an electrical connection?

Both BX36 and BX42 installation manuals require a hardwired electrical connection. The blower and lighting need household power; backup controls do not eliminate normal wiring requirements. We coordinate the electrical work, so you do not need to arrange that part of the project separately.

Can I place a television above a Napoleon Ascent X?

Potentially, with a compliant design. The chosen heat-management kit, mantel or recess arrangement and the television’s temperature limits determine what is appropriate. No universal TV clearance applies to every installation.

Can the Napoleon Ascent X use an existing gas line?

Possibly. Chimneys Plus checks fuel type, pipe capacity, pressure, shutoff access and the demand from other appliances. An existing connection does not automatically mean that the line is adequate for the new fireplace.

Does installing or replacing a Napoleon Ascent X require permits?

Yes, fireplace switch-outs require permitting even when a gas line already exists. Chimneys Plus confirms the applicable requirements and handles permits for the installation.

How should I maintain a Napoleon Ascent X?

Follow the model’s care instructions and arrange qualified inspection and service at least annually. Burner and pilot condition, approved media placement, glass, controls and venting all deserve attention. Keep required barriers installed and keep enclosure air openings unobstructed.
