Urbana U33 Tall Gas Fireplace Selection and Installation
A fireplace selected around your room
A tall fireplace changes the way a room feels. The Urbana U33 Tall takes the U33’s clean-faced style into a dramatic vertical format, with approximately 60 inches of glass height. It is a compelling option for a feature wall where a standard rectangular or low linear opening would feel understated.
Serving the Triangle and surrounding Central North Carolina communities.
Choose the U33 Tall when the height and scale of the fire are central to your design. The standard one-sided arrangement creates a strong focal point, while an approved see-through configuration can connect two spaces through a shared view of the flame. Chimneys Plus helps you evaluate those possibilities alongside the practical requirements of the installation.
Design choices that make a difference
The tall enclosure combines a three-dimensional stainless-steel burner with approved traditional or birch split-log options. A fluted liner supplies a textured backdrop; optional black glass offers a different visual effect. The clean face keeps louvers out of the front composition, allowing the fire and the surrounding materials to define the design.
The U33 Tall is not simply a taller cabinet that can use the standard U33’s installation plan. It has a higher fuel input and a required power vent. That makes early vent-routing and electrical planning especially important. If your main goal is a fireplace that will run when household power is unavailable, we will point you toward a more suitable configuration or model instead.
Planning the installation
These are built-in gas fireplaces with their own fireboxes, not inserts that need an existing fireplace around them. Installation includes the framed enclosure, manufacturer-approved exterior venting, gas supply, electrical connection and the prescribed chase ventilation. The sealed direct-vent combustion system brings combustion air from outdoors instead of using already-conditioned room air and exhausting it outside. Chase ventilation is a separate room-side heat-management requirement; it does not replace the combustion vent.
Chimneys Plus plans the support, clearances, vent route and surrounding finishes as a complete project. We handle or coordinate the gas piping, required electrical work and applicable permits, including the requirements for a replacement installation. A fireplace’s visible glass dimensions are not its installed footprint.

Frequently asked questions
What makes the Urbana U33 Tall different from a standard U33?
The Tall has a much taller viewing format—approximately 60 inches of glass height rather than 34 inches—and a 59,000-BTU/h maximum fuel input. It also requires a power vent. These are meaningful design and installation differences, not just interchangeable trim choices.
Can the Urbana U33 Tall operate during a power outage?
No, not without an appropriate approved source of household electrical power. Its required power vent needs electricity to move combustion gases through the vent system. Batteries in the remote cannot run that fan, so we do not recommend choosing the U33 Tall for ordinary battery-backed outage operation.
Why does the Urbana U33 Tall need a power vent?
The approved power-vent arrangement is part of this model’s installation requirements. We plan its route and termination together with the fireplace, using the manufacturer’s permitted components and limits. It is not an optional fan that can be omitted for quieter or outage operation.
Can the Urbana U33 Tall be installed as a see-through fireplace?
Yes, using its approved see-through components and installation instructions. Both sides of the wall need suitable finishes, clearances and access. We work through those details before deciding whether a shared fire view is right for the layout.
Does the Urbana U33 Tall require electrical work and a gas line?
Yes. It needs the correct fuel supply and a hardwired 120VAC connection, including the approved power-vent wiring. Chimneys Plus handles or coordinates the gas piping and required electrical work so those requirements are part of the overall project.
Does installing an Urbana U33 Tall require a permit?
We confirm the applicable requirements and handle the permitting for the project. An existing gas line or a fireplace replacement does not automatically remove that requirement.
Can the Urbana U33 Tall fit in any existing fireplace opening?
No. It is a complete built-in fireplace, not an insert, and its tall firebox requires a specifically designed enclosure. The published glass measurements do not include all framing, support, vent-routing and clearance space. We evaluate the entire installation rather than just the opening you can see.
How do I keep an Urbana U33 Tall working properly?
Schedule professional inspection and service at least annually and follow the appliance instructions. The power vent, termination, safety controls, burner, pilot, glass and air passages all need attention. Keep the approved screen and interior media arrangements intact, and have unusual operation checked rather than bypassing a control.
