Vermont Castings Radiance Gas Stove Selection and Installation
A larger traditional stove with a substantial presence
The Radiance Direct Vent is the largest of the current Vermont Castings gas-stove families. Its broad cast-iron design is worth exploring when you want the stove to be a prominent part of the room and need a heating range suited to the space.
Serving the Triangle and surrounding Central North Carolina communities.
Chimneys Plus helps you compare the Radiance with smaller models and other styles. The best choice should deliver comfortable heat without overpowering the room, and it must suit the available installation location.
When you’re adding a fire feature where none exists, a freestanding gas stove can offer beautiful flames, comfortable warmth, and backup heat with less remodeling and a smaller overall investment than a built-in fireplace. It’s still a significant home improvement, but typically avoids the framed enclosure and extensive finish work of a new built-in fireplace.
A welcoming fire and practical heat
- A broad traditional cast-iron design with compatible finish options.
- A larger format than the Intrepid and Stardance families.
- Sealed direct venting, using outside combustion air and exhausting outdoors.
- Configuration-specific controls, with standing-pilot and IntelliFire Touch versions offering different operating packages.
- Useful outage heat when the gas supply and the selected model’s backup provisions are available.
Plan the stove and the installation together
The Radiance is freestanding, so it does not need an existing fireplace. Its size still calls for careful planning around walls, shelves, flooring, vent routing and the gas supply. We assess the whole installation rather than treating body dimensions as clearance requirements.
IntelliFire Touch versions require household electricity during normal use and have batteries for emergency outages. Standing-pilot versions differ. If a suitable power source needs to be added, Chimneys Plus coordinates the electrical work along with the stove installation, gas piping and required permits.
The Chimneys Plus team includes CSIA- and NFI-certified professionals. Together with our North Carolina general contractor and fuel-piping licenses, these qualifications reflect our commitment to knowledgeable fireplace installation and service.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Radiance the right choice for a larger room?
It is a larger stove with a higher published maximum input than the Intrepid and Stardance, so it is worth considering. Room layout, insulation and heating goals still matter. We help you compare the operating range and installation requirements instead of relying on a square-foot estimate alone.
Does the Radiance require an existing fireplace?
No, but an existing hearth and masonry chimney may offer a great setting for a Radiance gas stove. Its top-vent system includes an approved arrangement for connecting through an eligible existing masonry chimney.
Chimneys Plus can assess your fireplace opening, hearth and chimney and help you choose a suitable placement and vent route. The Radiance’s size, floor requirements, mantel and side-wall clearances, and space for vent components all need to work together. An approved chimney connection alone does not establish that the stove will fit inside the fireplace opening.
How much space does the Vermont Castings Radiance take?
Its published body dimensions are approximately 31 inches wide, 28 inches high and 18¼ inches deep. Those measurements do not include all required clearances or venting space. We check the exact model, nearby walls and shelves, flooring and vent route before confirming placement.
Heating suitability matters too. We consider the room’s size and layout, ceiling height, insulation and how you want to use the Vermont Castings Radiance. The published heating-area estimate is a starting point, not a guarantee for every room. We compare its operating range, including lower-output settings, to help provide useful warmth without overheating the room.
Does the Vermont Castings Radiance need a hearth pad or special flooring?
Not always. The Radiance can be installed on suitable rigid flooring such as hardwood, ceramic tile or brick without a separate hearth. On carpet, it requires a metal or wooden panel covering the stove’s full width and depth to preserve clearance underneath. Adhesive-based vinyl is not recommended. For compatible floating vinyl plank or tile, the manufacturer recommends an alternative flooring surface in front of the stove; other manufactured flooring also needs a compatibility check. Final flooring requirements must follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions for your specific model. Chimneys Plus will confirm those when planning installation.
Does the Vermont Castings Radiance use indoor air for the fire?
Its direct-vent combustion system takes combustion air from outside and carries exhaust outdoors. This keeps the combustion process separate from room air. The appliance must remain assembled and operated as the manufacturer specifies.
Does the Vermont Castings Radiance have to vent through the ceiling?
No. An approved Vermont Castings Radiance installation can vent through an exterior wall instead of the ceiling and roof. Its top-vented design still needs a vertical section of pipe before turning toward the wall. Chimneys Plus checks the permitted vent route, required clearances and outdoor termination location to determine what works for your home.
Can the Radiance provide backup heat?
Yes! The gas fire can provide useful room warmth during an outage with the correct configuration and an available gas supply. Standing-pilot versions do not depend on household power for the fire; IntelliFire Touch versions use their emergency battery system. Electrically powered fans do not run on backup batteries, and whole-home heating is not guaranteed.
Is household electricity required for the Vermont Castings Radiance?
For IntelliFire Touch, yes: normal operation requires a household electrical supply. Four AA batteries provide emergency backup and are not intended as the primary long-term power source. Standing-pilot versions have different requirements; electrical fans and accessories still need power. Chimneys Plus coordinates any required electrical work.
How is the Vermont Castings Radiance controlled?
That depends on the ignition version and selected controls. IntelliFire Touch and standing-pilot versions should not be assumed to include the same remote, thermostat or fan features. We help specify the package and explain how to use it.
Can the Vermont Castings Radiance operate on propane?
Yes, in the proper approved configuration. Propane and natural-gas ratings differ, so we confirm the exact model and supply before installation. Any fuel conversion is qualified professional work.
Can Chimneys Plus add a gas line for the Vermont Castings Radiance?
Yes! Chimneys Plus is licensed in North Carolina for fuel-piping work and routinely includes it in gas-appliance projects. We assess the supply requirements and handle the required permit.
Will the Vermont Castings Radiance installation need a permit?
In most cases, yes. Chimneys Plus confirms the permit requirements for your stove installation, including any gas-line or venting work, and handles the required permitting as part of your project. You won’t need to navigate that process on your own.
Does the Radiance need ongoing service?
Yes. Regular professional service and the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions help keep the burner, pilot, glass, seals, controls and venting in proper condition. Keep the approved logs in their prescribed positions and arrange service if operation changes.
