Urbana U50 Tall Ultra and U70 Tall Ultra Bay and Linear Gas Fireplace Selection and Installation

A fireplace selected around your room

For a fireplace chosen primarily for the fire itself, Urbana’s Tall Ultra series puts the log-and-flame presentation at center stage. The U50 Tall Ultra and U70 Tall Ultra use Urbana’s Fire-in-Log burner system within a tall, contemporary glass enclosure. Bay and single-sided Linear arrangements let you decide whether the flame should reach into the room visually or sit within a more contained feature wall.

Serving the Triangle and surrounding Central North Carolina communities.

This is a design-led choice for homeowners who want a substantial fire view and the detail of a log-centered display. It is important to distinguish it from a heating-focused fireplace: the manufacturer classifies Tall Ultra as a decorative gas appliance, not a source of heat. We will help you compare a different model if room heating or emergency backup heat is a primary requirement.

What makes this family different

The double-glass barrier keeps a mesh screen out of the view, and the roughly 26-inch-high front glass gives the logs and flames a generous setting. Shale media and a steel-fluted liner are listed as standard features; optional liners let you change the backdrop. Approved corner and one-sided installation kits create different architectural presentations without treating one layout as permission for any custom enclosure.

The remote controls the flame and accent-light functions. Its thermostat button should not be taken as a promise of thermostatic heating: the Ultra user manual states that thermostat mode is not used, and the U.S. installation instructions prohibit thermostat operation for this decorative appliance.

Planning a complete installation

These are built-in gas fireplaces with their own fireboxes, not inserts that need an existing fireplace around them. Installation includes the framed enclosure, manufacturer-approved exterior venting, gas supply, electrical connection and the prescribed chase ventilation. The sealed direct-vent combustion system brings combustion air from outdoors instead of using already-conditioned room air and exhausting it outside. Chase ventilation is a separate room-side heat-management requirement; it does not replace the combustion vent.

The finish design must preserve the specified air inlets and outlets. A “Cool Surface” or double-glass feature does not allow clearances to be ignored or guarantee compatibility with every television, mantel or finish. We coordinate the fireplace instructions with the requirements of the materials and equipment around it.

Chimneys Plus handles or coordinates the gas piping, required electrical work and permitting, including applicable requirements for a fireplace replacement. You do not need to arrange those trades separately.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Urbana Tall Ultra intended to heat my room?

Choose it for its decorative fire presentation, not as a room heater. The manufacturer identifies Tall Ultra as a decorative gas appliance and says it is not a source of heat. It still becomes hot and needs all specified clearances and heat-management provisions; decorative classification does not mean cool-to-touch.

Does an Urbana Tall Ultra fireplace need an existing fireplace?

No. It includes its own firebox and is installed within a properly designed enclosure. It is not an insert for an existing masonry or factory-built fireplace.

Can an Urbana Tall Ultra fireplace run during a power outage?

No. Tall Ultra is not an outage-heating choice. Its double-glass cooling system and safety controls require household electricity, and a power vent also needs power. In addition, the manufacturer classifies it as decorative rather than a heating appliance.

Does an Urbana Tall Ultra fireplace require electrical work?

Yes. A hardwired household electrical supply is part of the installation, not just an optional convenience for the remote. We confirm the model’s circuit, controls, lighting and any powered accessories, then handle or coordinate the required electrical work.

Can Chimneys Plus install the gas line and arrange permits for an Urbana Tall Ultra fireplace?

Yes. We handle or coordinate the appropriate gas piping and applicable permits along with the fireplace installation. An existing line still needs its capacity and condition checked; a replacement is not automatically exempt from permitting.

Can I place a television or combustible finish above an Urbana Tall Ultra fireplace?

Possibly, with the approved installation details. The enclosure’s heat-release openings, clearances and finish limits must be maintained, and the television’s own temperature and placement requirements also apply. We plan the whole wall rather than assume that a cooler-surface feature permits any arrangement.

How do I select the size of an Urbana Tall Ultra fireplace?

Start with the proportions of the room, seating positions and the fire view you want. We help compare the available models and their installation requirements, then plan the enclosure and required clearances around the finished design. Where room heating is a priority, we help identify a model designed for that purpose and consider the room’s layout, insulation and comfort needs.

What care does an Urbana Tall Ultra fireplace need?

Plan for professional inspection and service at least annually and as required by the manual. Service includes the burner and pilot, venting, glass and seals, air passages, safety components and any fans. Use only the approved interior media arrangements; do not add decorative material that changes combustion or obstructs airflow.
