Ortal Indoor Outdoor Tunnel Gas Fireplace Selection and Installation
An Ortal Indoor-Outdoor Tunnel fireplace lets one flame become part of the indoor living area and the outdoor gathering space. It is an appealing option when a patio or covered sitting area sits directly beyond a room where you already want a fireplace. The result can be a visual connection between inside and outside without installing two independent fireboxes.
Serving the Triangle and surrounding Central North Carolina communities.
This is a specific direct-vent fireplace and Indoor-Outdoor kit arrangement. It should not be confused with an indoor-only Tunnel or an outdoor-only fireplace. Chimneys Plus can help determine whether the exterior wall, outdoor exposure and interior layout suit the approved installation.
Plan both sides from the beginning
The current collection includes 31H, 60×80 and 75×65 formats, along with 110, 130, 150, 170, 200 and 250 size families and selected H and HH heights. The installation uses model-specific framing and exterior components; the project is more than an indoor fireplace with the back opened to a patio.
We plan the indoor sightline and outdoor seating together, then address the wall depth, weather protection, service access, vent termination and required airflow. This fireplace is a shared visual feature, not a promise to heat an open patio like an enclosed room. A double-glass configuration also brings electrical requirements that matter if backup heat is part of your wish list.
Installation and representative specifications
A sealed direct-vent combustion system takes air from outside and exhausts outdoors rather than using indoor conditioned air for combustion. It must be installed with the prescribed Indoor-Outdoor kit and construction details.
For the Indoor-Outdoor Tunnel 110:
- Published viewing area: 43 5/8 by 13 3/4 inches.
- Maximum natural-gas input: 37,167 BTU/hour.
- Maximum propane input: 35,316 BTU/hour.
- Standard venting: 5-by-8-inch coaxial direct vent.
- Published heat barrier: double glass.
- Household power is required; the current built-in manual specifies a 120-volt, 15-amp, 60-Hz duplex receptacle.
These ratings apply to the named 110 model. They are fuel input rather than delivered heat. We verify the current specifications and kit requirements for the selected size before design approval.

Frequently asked questions
Is an Ortal Indoor-Outdoor Tunnel fireplace the same as an outdoor fireplace?
No. It is a specific arrangement that connects an indoor face and an outdoor face through an exterior wall. Ortal’s outdoor-only models are a separate collection with different installation rules.
Can an ordinary Ortal Tunnel fireplace be installed indoors and outdoors?
Only an approved model with the correct Indoor-Outdoor kit and installation details can be used that way. We verify the exact combination rather than assuming any see-through fireplace is suitable.
Will an Ortal Indoor-Outdoor Tunnel fireplace work during a power outage?
Do not rely on the double-glass Indoor-Outdoor configuration for battery-only backup heat. The double-glass system requires AC power. If outage heating is important, we can help compare an indoor fireplace configuration specifically approved for that use.
Does an Ortal Indoor-Outdoor Tunnel fireplace need electrical work?
Yes. We plan the required household electrical supply with the gas and venting, and coordinate any necessary electrical work. A battery-powered remote does not power the double-glass system.
How much patio heat will an Ortal Indoor-Outdoor Tunnel fireplace provide?
Outdoor comfort varies with wind, exposure and seating position. We recommend selecting this fireplace primarily for its shared fire view rather than a square-foot outdoor heating promise.
Who handles gas piping and permits for an Ortal Indoor-Outdoor Tunnel fireplace?
Chimneys Plus checks the gas capacity, handles or coordinates the piping and electrical work, and handles applicable permits. Existing gas service does not eliminate the need to review those requirements.
What service does an Ortal Indoor-Outdoor Tunnel fireplace require?
Arrange qualified inspection and maintenance at least annually, with attention to both faces, barriers, glass seals, burner, venting and required airflow paths. Outdoor exposure also makes the condition of the exterior installation important.
