Valor P2 Gas Insert Selection and Installation

A premium alternative with a larger fire view

The Valor P2 is a more premium alternative to the Portrait/President, with a larger viewing window and the newer Valor 10 control system. Its compact, upright format is worth comparing when you want a more prominent fire view and convenient gas heat without moving to a wide fireplace.

Serving the Triangle and surrounding Central North Carolina communities.

This page focuses on the P2 as an insert inside an eligible existing wood-burning fireplace, so you can retain your existing hearth while making it easier to use. Portrait and its President style remain important options for smaller historic fireplaces. Chimneys Plus can help you compare them with the P2 based on your fireplace’s fit, the appearance you prefer and the controls you want.

Why consider the P2?

  • Compact proportions. An upright flame view offers an alternative to wider inserts and linear fireplaces.
  • Choice of appearance. Compatible log or coal fuel beds, liners and fronts let you tailor the finished look.
  • Convenient controls. The included Valor 10 remote controls operation; app connectivity is an optional addition.
  • Backup warmth. Radiant heating can continue during a power outage with a gas supply and working control batteries.
  • Sealed direct venting. Combustion air comes from outdoors and exhaust is carried outside.

An insert fits inside your existing fireplace

In an insert installation, the P2 goes inside an approved existing wood-burning fireplace rather than replacing the entire fireplace. The host fireplace, selected front and vent arrangement must meet the installation requirements; it cannot simply be placed inside any existing gas fireplace.

A built-in P2 installation is a different application. Its own firebox is installed in a properly framed enclosure with the specified clearances and venting, and it does not need another fireplace around it.

Fronts and backing plates for insert installations

  • Clearview (245CFV). Choose the flat 235BPB1 or 235BPB2 backing plate, or the insert-only 235SBPB1 reduced-depth plate for an eligible fully recessed installation.
  • 4-sided Ledgeview (246LFB or 246LFAS). This front is approved for insert applications. It extends 1½ inches below the appliance, so the hearth arrangement must accommodate it.
  • Richmond cast surround (263RCB). This front is approved for insert applications with a minimum 12-inch cavity depth. Its weight must be supported by the hearth or floor.

Clearview, Ledgeview and Richmond can also be used in approved built-in P2 installations; the reduced-depth 235SBPB1 plate is limited to fully inserted applications. The 230CIK Clean Installation Kit is installed during framing for a built-in finish rather than selected as an interchangeable insert surround. Chimneys Plus confirms the front, backing plate, hearth and clearances for your particular fireplace.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Valor P2 compare to other Valor gas fireplaces?

The P2 is a more premium alternative to the Portrait/President when you want a larger viewing window and Valor 10 controls in a compact, upright appliance. Portrait/President remains worth considering for smaller historic fireplaces, particularly when preserving the hearth’s traditional character is a priority. We compare the complete installation requirements, heating goals and appearance rather than simply selecting the highest BTU number.

Does the Valor P2 come with a remote?

Yes. It includes the Valor 10 remote. Wi-Fi/app control requires optional equipment and a suitable powered network connection; it is not needed for ordinary handheld-remote operation.

Can I keep my TV cool above the P2?

HeatShift is for built-in P2 fireplace installations, not the insert installation covered on this page. Whether a TV can be placed above your insert depends on heat exposure, the existing mantel, required clearances and the TV manufacturer’s requirements. Chimneys Plus can help evaluate the proposed location before you install the TV.

Is the P2 natural gas or propane?

It is available in either version: 200AN for natural gas or 200AP for propane. We select the correct model and evaluate the gas supply for your installation.

Can the P2 be installed in an existing fireplace?

Yes, in an eligible existing fireplace that meets the P2’s requirements. In that application, the P2 is installed inside the fireplace; it does not replace the entire fireplace.

The required cavity depends on the front, backing plate and vent arrangement. For the Clearview 245CFV front with the 235SBPB1 reduced-depth backing plate, Valor allows a 12-inch minimum cavity depth only when the appliance is fully recessed into an eligible existing solid-fuel-burning fireplace. This is not a universal width-by-height-by-depth clearance for every P2 installation. Other arrangements have their own requirements, including room for vent connections and bends.

Chimneys Plus checks the complete configuration, gas-line location and protrusion, hearth conditions, and required mantel, mantel-leg and sidewall clearances before confirming fit. A built-in installation uses separate framing and clearance requirements.

Is the Valor P2 a dependable backup heat source?

Yes! The Valor P2 can provide dependable backup heat during a power outage. Its burner and radiant heating do not depend on household electricity, so you can continue enjoying warmth as long as your gas supply is available and the control-system batteries are working.

The optional blower requires electricity, but the appliance continues heating without it. It’s a practical source of warmth for your main living area when central heating is unavailable, rather than a guarantee of heating your entire home.

Can Chimneys Plus install a gas line for the Valor P2 if my fireplace doesn’t have one?

Yes! Chimneys Plus is licensed in North Carolina to install gas piping, and we routinely handle this work as part of gas fireplace appliance installations. We can evaluate your existing gas supply, install the piping needed for your new appliance and handle the required permitting.

Is a permit required in North Carolina to install a Valor P2 gas insert?

Permit requirements depend on the work involved and your local inspection department. Installing a new gas line requires permitting. Replacing the fireplace itself also requires permitting, even when the gas line already exists.

For gas logs or an insert installed inside an existing fireplace, we’ll confirm the requirements for your project. Whenever a permit is required, Chimneys Plus handles the permitting for you.

Should I choose gas logs or a gas insert such as the Valor P2?

The right choice depends on your existing fireplace and what you want from it. Vented gas logs are primarily chosen for the appearance and ambiance of an open fire. If you want regular room heat, convenient temperature control and dependable backup heat, a direct-vent gas insert is often a better fit.

Vent-free gas logs can provide a quick burst of warmth, such as taking the chill off a room in the morning. They also release combustion byproducts and moisture into the home. Chimneys Plus recommends short operating periods, generally a couple of hours at a time, rather than continuous heating, with ventilation that may include cracking a window as required by the appliance instructions and room conditions. An open window does not replace those ventilation requirements.

For longer periods of heating, a sealed direct-vent insert is often the better choice. It draws combustion air from outdoors and vents exhaust outside. If you’re adding a fireplace where none exists or replacing the entire fireplace, a built-in gas fireplace may be the appropriate option instead. We can help you compare these choices based on your home, heating goals and preferred appearance.

Do I need to choose an insert such as the Valor P2 before contacting Chimneys Plus?

No! You don’t need to know which brand or model you want before reaching out. Tell us what you’d like to improve about your fireplace, whether that’s warmth, ambiance, convenience or backup heat, and we’ll help you compare suitable options.

We can guide you through the differences in fit, performance and style so you can choose an insert with confidence.
